CHUN: Painting with Threads
Chun is a Vietnamese artist based in Vienna who makes incredibly unique artworks using large industrial-grade embroidery machines. He describes his art as playful and childlike.
I first met Chun when I went over to his place to get a hoodie embroidered. He offers emergency embroidery services in his flat, which he shares with his two cats. I had followed his work and social media for a while before that but it was fascinating to finally meet him and stand in the place he works. I could instantly tell this guys lives and breathes his art, which made me really curious about him. I casually asked if he’s down to shoot a short documentary together. He thought it’s a cool idea and we met up a few months later to film.
After arriving and getting to know each other a bit, we recorded a short interview. Chun was finishing up an artwork he was making for a friend. He walked me through the process of how he approaches and completes his pieces. It was very entertaining to quietly watch and capture his creative flow.
Chun only worked on one part of the piece that day but it took a total of three hours. He really puts so much focus and precision into his work. The constant drilling sound of the embroidery machine eventually puts you in a trance-like state, which I honestly really enjoyed. I had a great time making this video and I hope you enjoyed it too!
