Inside Never-At-Home: Vienna’s Creative Hub at Funkhaus Wien

Never At Home has steadily grown into one of Vienna’s key platforms for contemporary art. Since launching in 2021, the independent, non-commercial project has focused on more than just providing studio space. It offers opportunities for artists to connect, collaborate, and share their work. Through exhibitions, workshops, and residencies, Never At Home supports creative potential while revitalizing overlooked spaces across the city.

A New Chapter at Funkhaus Wien

Since October 2024, Never At Home opened its most ambitious location yet inside Vienna’s historic Funkhaus Wien. Located in the 4th district, Funkhaus Wien is Austria’s oldest broadcasting center and a landmark of architectural and cultural significance. Since 1999, the building has been under heritage protection, recognized not only for its historical role but also for its distinctive, timeless architecture.

Now, Never At Home is writing the next chapter in the building’s long story.

Their new location inside Funkhaus offers 73 studio spaces, tailored for visual artists, musicians, and creatives of all disciplines. The building’s rich history and thoughtful design create a unique backdrop for artistic work, blending past and present under one roof.

A Glimpse Into the Studios

During a recent exhibition, Never At Home opened the doors of Funkhaus Wien for a guided tour through both the exhibition spaces and the artists’ studios. Visitors had the chance to walk directly into the working studios, experience works-in-progress, and meet several of the resident artists. The atmosphere felt open, informal, and inviting.

Rather than the distance typical of gallery settings, the tour offered something different—a look behind the scenes. Paintings, sculptures, tools, and sketches filled the studios, giving visitors a sense of the process behind each piece. The creative energy was unmistakable, shaped both by the artists and by the building itself.

More Than Just Studio Space

Never At Home’s mission extends well beyond offering physical space. Its goal is to foster connection, collaboration, and growth within Vienna’s creative community. By transforming iconic locations like Funkhaus Wien into vibrant creative hubs, the project continues to play a key role in the city’s evolving art scene.

For artists seeking a place to work, experiment, and connect—or anyone interested in exploring Vienna’s creative landscape—Never At Home’s new home at Funkhaus Wien is well worth discovering.
